They\u2019ll say that, by narrowing down, you\u2019re excluding potential paid projects.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not exactly a lie.<\/p>\n<p>You <em>will <\/em>be excluding some projects. But saying \u201cno\u201d is critical for business success &#8211; whether you\u2019re a copywriter or a candle-maker &#8211; it\u2019s simply fundamental to your growth.<\/p>\n<p>Niching down means that you\u2019re positioning yourself as an expert in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine, for example, you were opening a new Spanish restaurant. This is your only source of income, and failure is not an option.<\/p>\n<p>You need an architect to design your modern, atmospheric restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Would you outsource to a general architect who has worked on a range of projects? Or would you pick an architect that specializes in Spanish restaurants?<\/p>\n<p>It provides the client with a sense of relief because it tells them that you\u2019re well-versed in their needs.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t solely benefit your clients.<\/p>\n<p>Niching down means you\u2019ll only work on projects that you genuinely want to work on. For some copywriters, writing about construction is their worst nightmare. If they niche down into their preferred area &#8211; let\u2019s say the Health and Wellness industry &#8211; they won\u2019t ever need to write about different construction tools.<\/p>\n<p>It also increases your demand, because more clients would prefer a specialist. If you\u2019ve niched down, you\u2019re supplying that demand, meaning you\u2019ll gain more clients (at a higher quality).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, niching down will help inspire your content generation. You\u2019re able to provide educational content that is more specific to your client\u2019s needs, which will prove you &#8211; as a brand &#8211; are more relatable than others.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Find_Your_Copywriting_Niche\"><\/span>How to Find Your Copywriting Niche<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019ve read the above nodding your head and you\u2019ve decided to narrow down your copywriting services and find your niche, you may feel tentative.<\/p>\n<p>This is usually because you don\u2019t know how to find your copywriting niche.<\/p>\n<p>So, allow me to help you.<\/p>\n<p>As a copywriter, there are a few different ways you can niche:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By industry <em>(eg: a medical copywriter)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>By deliverable <em>(eg: a website copywriter)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>By audience type <em>(eg: a copywriter for tutors and teachers)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>By copywriter-type <em>(eg: a direct-response copywriter)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main consideration you need to spend a whole lot of time on is <strong><em>why <\/em><\/strong>you&#8217;re choosing your niche.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, it\u2019s not enough to simply pick one. You need a valid reason why. And that reason should go above \u201cbecause I like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Say you wanted to become a non-profit copywriter. This niche means you\u2019d be working with various non-profits around the world and helping to bring in more donations. You\u2019d then have to ask yourself \u201cwhy?\u201d. But every piece in your portfolio should be the best example of your work.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019ve not niched until now, you may need to change <a href=\"https:\/\/lizslyman.com\/creating-a-copywriting-portfolio-with-no-experience\/\">your copywriting portfolio <\/a>to demonstrate that niche.<\/p>\n<p>So, say that you have written an excellent sales page for a course on how to build your Instagram following. If you have niched down into being an email copywriter, then this piece shouldn\u2019t be displayed in your portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Everything needs to be consistent and prove your subject specialism. Remember, clients, want a specialist because of their experience in that specialty. So, your portfolio needs to prove this.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, you need to build on your existing portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to get clients, you may write this off and say \u201cbut I can\u2019t get any copywriting clients &#8211; how am I meant to build my portfolio without clients?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where a whole lot of new copywriters go wrong. They wait and wait for a client to reach out to them first.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that it\u2019s a vicious circle. You can\u2019t build a portfolio without clients. And you can\u2019t get clients without a portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you break this cycle?<\/p>\n<p>With spec work.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Build_Your_Copywriting_Portfolio_With_Spec_Work\"><\/span>Build Your Copywriting Portfolio With Spec Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Spec work is a great asset to your portfolio &#8211; particularly at the beginning of your full-time copywriting career.<\/p>\n<p>Spec work is essentially a piece of writing for any brand out there &#8211; even fictitious ones &#8211; that you\u2019ve decided to write without working with said brand.<\/p>\n<p>So long as you label it as \u201cspec work\u201d on your portfolio, you have no limitations to what you can do.<\/p>\n<p>Always wanted to write for a brand like Mcdonald&#8217;s, Nike, or Mac? Go for it. Create spec work that surrounds their products. Or, you could even make a product up.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve niched down according to the deliverable, you could create spec work surrounding said deliverable.<\/p>\n<p>Say, for example, you niched down and you\u2019re now a Website Copywriter for Pet Shops, you could create a range of different websites for different brands in the pet industry.<\/p>\n<p>As you gain more clients, you can replace your spec work with actual client work. But there\u2019s nothing wrong with having a healthy piece of spec work in your portfolio even when you\u2019re 10 years down the line and super successful.<\/p>\n<p>It simply drives the message home that you\u2019re able to write for bigger brands and adapt, and that you write &#8211; even when you don\u2019t \u201chave to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Get_Your_Name_Out_There\"><\/span>3.\u00a0\u00a0 Get Your Name Out There<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Business gurus and coaches say \u201cget your name out there\u201d as if it\u2019s the easiest thing in the world.<\/p>\n<p>I acknowledge that it\u2019s easier said than done, but marketing your copywriting business is crucial. It\u2019s impossible to gain clients if no one knows who you are and what you can do for them.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the main differences between side hustlers in copywriting and full-time copywriters. Side hustlers often stick to Freelancing platforms and &#8211; in reality &#8211; it\u2019s not the end of the world if you have a few months with no clients, as you\u2019re relying on your 9-5\u2019s salary to keep you ticking over.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re a full-time copywriter, you don\u2019t have this luxury.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why marketing is so important.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you market your copywriting business? Here are a few different strategies you can use to start off with.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Launch_a_Website\"><\/span>Launch a Website<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In 2022, it\u2019s almost impossible to grow a business without a website. You can rely on social media (more on that in just a second) for a time period, but it should be your main aim of yours to get a website up and running.<\/p>\n<p>This website should display your portfolio, give visitors more information about your services, and introduce them to your brand. If you have the money to invest in a professional website designer, I\u2019d highly recommend it.<\/p>\n<p>However, for a lot of new full-time copywriters, having the money to invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/phelixinfosolutions.com\/blog\/smarter-businesses-and-partnering-with-web-development-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professional website development<\/a> isn\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n<p>If that is the case, search for templates that best represent your brand, your services, and &#8211; most importantly &#8211; your target audience and ideal client.<\/p>\n<p>It may be that you launch a website using a template and keep it running for a year or two. Users who are on TikTok, for example, are different from users on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified the top platform(s), then you can invest your time and energy into creating content consistently.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, too, that <a href=\"https:\/\/phelixinfosolutions.com\/blog\/10-essential-social-media-marketing-trends\/\">social media marketing<\/a> is driven by value. Of course, there are lots of benefits to doing so, and I\u2019d highly recommend it if you can manage it, but you\u2019re not forced to.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, join different Facebook groups and virtual networking events.
